Are you Switched On for every journey you make this Rail Safety Week?
With a focus on developing decision making skills, pupils will learn to identify potential dangers on their own journeys, along with spotting risky behaviours in others.
Rail Safety Week
Rail Safety Week offers the perfect opportunity to bring potentially life-saving rail safety education into the classroom and help pupils aged 7-11 develop their skills and understanding of how to stay Switched On and safe around the railway.
Each day we’ll be spotlighting different resources from the Switched On for Every Journey programme to help you bring rail safety education to life. Every day resources will focus on central theme to help you build your pupils’ rail safety knowledge.
Check back daily for suggested activities. Timings and further guidance for how to deliver resources can be found in the Teacher Guidance on each resource page.
Learning outcome: To be introduced to the railway environment and understand how to demonstrate safe behaviours
Pupils start with a baseline quiz (30mins) that will help identify any misconceptions around the railway. They'll then explore the correct behaviours to display around the railway and the impact of this.
For pupils aged 7-9, follow the story of Arlo's Adventure (50mins) and play an interactive game to learn about railway safety.
For pupils aged 9-11, explore the consequences of being switched off around the railway with the When Rodrigo Switched Off (25mins) audio case study.
